  • Environmental Control Systems (ECS)

    The ECS is one of civil aircraft's largest power consumption and nonpropulsive systems. It provides air supply, thermal control, and cabin pressurization for the crew and passengers. The ECS in conventional aircraft is designed to use the bleed air from the engine to achieve the required temperature and pressure of the cabin air.

    What it does:

    In the ECS, pneumatic servo valves convert an electrical input signal from a controller to modulate a pneumatic flow supply, which then controls the position/movement of a valve or actuator within the ECS.

    Types of servo valves used in the system:

    -Cabin Temperature Control Valve

    -Bleed Air Valve

    -Bleed Isolation Valve

  • Fuel Metering Unit (FMU)

    The FMU controls a precise amount of fuel to engine combustors and alters the position of various devices to increase or decrease fuel flow.

    What it does:

    In the FMU, servo valves convert an electrical input signal from a controller to modulate a fluid flow supply, which controls the position/movement of a valve or actuator within the FMU.

    Types of servo valves used in the unit:

  • Hydromechanical Unit (HMU)

    The HMU controls multiple systems, including the fuel metering unit, variable stator vanes, turbine active-clearance controls, and fuel nozzle staging.

    What it does:

    In the HMU, pneumatic and hydraulic servo valves are used to convert an electrical input signal from a controller to modulate a fluid flow supply, which then controls the position/movement of a valve or actuator within the HMU.

    -Active Clearance Control Valve

  • Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)

    The APU are small gas turbine engines generally located in the aircraft tail. They allow an aircraft to operate autonomously without reliance on ground support equipment to start the main engines, provide electrical power, and supply inflight backup power.

    What it does:

    In the APU, servo valves are used to convert an electrical input signal from a controller to modulate a fluid flow supply, which then controls the position/movement of a valve or actuator within the APU.

  • Anti-Icing, De-Icing, and Ice Protection Systems

    Most Anti-Icing Systems direct hot engine bleed air to critical aircraft surfaces such as the engine nacelles, wings, and propellers to evaporate water when it strikes the protected surface to prevent ice from forming.

    What it does:

    Servo valves convert an electrical input signal from a controller to modulate a pneumatic flow supply, which then controls the position/movement of a valve or actuator within the Anti-icing, De-Icing and Ice Protection System.
